Monday 20 June

Time: 19:00 - 20:00

Location: Palácio das Necessidades (by own transport)

Used as a royal residence by Portuguese Kings until the beginning of the 20th Century, the Palácio das Necessidades survived the earthquake in 1755 and is now set in beautiful gardens with a vast array of exotic plants.  When the monarchy was abolished in 1910, the Palace saw its precious art collections divided between several museums and remained empty until it was occupied by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1926.  In 1952 the Ministry also took over the old Convent building which has been the HQ for Lisbon’s military and the Republican Guard since.

Gala dinner evening

Thursday 23 June

Time: Evening (transport provided)

Reception hosted by the Mayor of Sintra in Palácio de Pena.

We begin the evening with a cocktail reception, generously hosted by the Mayor of Sintra, in the magnificent Pena Palace, the jewel in the crown of the Sintra Mountains.  The legacy of King Fernando II and the epitome of 19th Century Romanticism in Portugal, the Palace is a hedonistic blend of vividly painted terraces, decorative battlements, and mythological statues, all of which stand in the magnificent, lush woodland of the Parque de Pena forest.

Conference day out to Évora

Friday 24 June

Time: 09:00 – 20:00

Leaving Lisbon, crossing the bridge over the Tagus, join us for the final event, the conference day out to Évora, an ancient city listed as a World Heritage Site, located 135 KM from Lisbon in the Alentego region. Thought of as one of the most influential cities of medieval Portugal, Évora is renowned for having one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in Iberia, the Temple of Diana, and its cobbled streets evoke the feeling of Lisbon before its destruction by the Great Earthquake of 1755.  Within the city, wall is a Gothic cathedral, renaissance palaces, and the skeleton-adorned Chapel of Bones, along with picturesque squares to soak up the atmosphere of this truly open-air museum to days gone by.    Just 2 km from Évora is Convento do Espinheiro, a 15th-century convent, now a hotel surrounded by acres of beautiful gardens and the perfect setting to enjoy lunch with your fellow explorers. Following lunch, we’ll travel on to the wine cellars of Cartuxa – Quinta de Valbom,  and the Cartuxa Monastery from which it takes its name. There you’ll enjoy a tour of this fascinating site along with a wine tasting!
